Asia continues heating up as a destination for cruising. The latest to announce plans for the region is mass-market giant Royal Caribbean, which says it’ll launch voyages out of Shanghai, Hong Kong and Singapore next year. The line follows Costa Cruises, which began sailing out of China in July. And Norwegian Cruise Line-parent Star Cruises already is a player in the area with ships based in Singapore and Hong Kong.
But are these trips right for Americans? Like Costa, Royal Caribbean expects to cater mostly to local Asians with its sailings, aboard the 2,435-passenger Rhapsody of the Seas, so those who sign up could face culture shock.
“There are some Americans who will love the experience,” notes industry watcher Mike Driscoll, publisher of Cruise Week (subscription only). Star Cruises already draws a few, he notes. “But in general an Asian cruise catering to an Asian market has very limited appeal to the North American traveler.”
Still thinking of going? Royal Caribbean is deploying a decent ship to the effort. While not the line’s newest or biggest, Rhapsody is just 9 years old and boasts many of the line’s trademarks, including a climbing wall and a soaring atrium. And the itinerary surely will be novel for cruisers tiring of the same-old Caribbean hangouts. The first cruises, out of Singapore, will stop in Malaysia and Thailand. Later trips from Hong Kong will hit Taiwan, Japan and China’s Hainan Island.
