While crossing my small living room floor, slinky apple in hand, drooling over the smell of a fresh crisp Washington apple, I experienced the worst form of unexpected torture. The comparison would be a blind-folded person who is expected to walk across a room full of prickly needles facing heads-up. Goat-heads are the worst form of torture known to this small compound. “ahhhOUCH! dratit!!” I dropped my apple on the floor, the cat pounced on it, and I pulled the goat head out of my socked-foot, gingerly tripping to the waste basket. Round number two. Thinking I had fared the worst, I gaily continued on with apple (washed) in hand, and just as I lay hand on the door knob, another one stabbed the same dumb foot. And I thought, “hey, it happened, I’ll write about it.” And so I did. I sit, feet out straight, so no goat-head that grew legs could come attack me, and right now, I am thoroughly enjoying this slinky apple. Except just as I put the period on the end of that last sentence, the cat jumped up from the floor, pounced on my apple, and dragged it away.

Something’s not quite right with Dexter. I hesitate to say he is mentally retarded, but he is definitely slow and child like. He does have this air of charming innocence about him. I have been seeing him often these days walking through town to check the dumpsters behind the various stores for riches only a poor man would hold dear. He is slowly becoming a regular of the gang. I need to add him to the cast of characters.
Culture warriors are certain to be up in arms in what they see as a battlefield in the annual "War on Christmas." The extent to which religious displays in the public square pass constitutional tests is contextual and thus a few details are necessary before we discuss court precedents.

Fernanada Tavares

I know that it has been awhile since I last posted. Over a month. I have been so busy and have had so many things going on that I have not been able to focus on this project at all. I was gone for two solid weeks at a training for Child Evangelism Fellowship. Then home for two weeks and then we left again for Thanksgiving to go to my sister's in Virginia. It ended up being a wild and crazy weekend that started last Tuesday.
All this talk of my artistic career reminds me of a work I didn't do called Glass Scrabble. Monomaniac readers may remember that this came about when I tried to say the phrase Class Struggle in the pub one night, and it came out as Glass Scrabble. This led to my contacting the makers of Scrabble and enquiring whether they would mind if I had a set made entirely out of glass, like a totally see-through set so that Zen Buddhists and conceptual artists could have a game - and yes, I wondered casually if they might wish to contribute to the manufacturing costs in return for a notice under the title declaring, Sponsered by Scrabble. No reply, never got round to doing it, so what's new?
Apparently, Newt Gingrich is not the only one who has no love for the First Amendment. The town of Pahrump, Nevada recently passed an ordinance that bans the flying of any foreign flag unless the US flag is displayed above it, along with an ordinance making English the official language and another denying all the benefits provided by the town to undocumented immigrants.

Nielsen RingScan

This week, Nielsen RingScan unveils its mastertone sales data, and Billboard publishes its inaugural mastertone chart, a clear indication of the song snippet's stature.

As album sales sag (down 5% this year), the constant busy signal in mastertone sales is giving the music industry hope for a turnaround. With Informa Telecoms and Media projecting a $6.8 billion mastertone business by 2010, labels are salivating over profit and promotional opportunities.

The mastertone's rise is evident in a comparison of Nielsen's RingScan and SoundScan data. In the week ending Nov. 12, Akon's Smack That was the No. 1 mastertone, with 164,000 sold. It was No. 2 on the digital chart after selling 104,000 downloads. Beyoncé's Irreplaceable sold 124,000 mastertones and 79,000 downloads.

In recognition of the mastertone's commercial and cultural clout, the Recording Industry Association of America, which has certified album sales for 47 years, recently introduced Master Ringtone Sales Awards by inaugurating 128 gold and platinum artists.

The ringtone market "is a big hip-hop place, heavily driven by teens, and they're veering to mastertones," says Geoff Mayfield, director of charts at Billboard, which will introduce its Hot RingMasters chart on Friday and transfer polyphonic rankings to its website. "The diminished polyphonic market is becoming more adult-leaning."

Polyphonic ringtones, synthesized reproductions of songs, were dominant in the market until more handsets could accommodate the actual sound recordings that constitute mastertones.

"We were floored at how big the polyphonic numbers were when we added the chart in October 2004," Mayfield says. "Week in and week out, the No. 1 polyphonic would outsell the best-selling digital track. You're talking about a whole song for 99 cents vs. a cheap synthesized version for up to three times the price. Then polyphonics started trailing off. People wanted the real songs."

The average cost for a ringtone is $2.40, says Paul Leakas, general manager of Nielsen Mobile. Polyphonics tend to range from $1.99 to $2.50, while mastertones run $3 or more. The price hasn't hampered the shift to mastertones.

"They've quickly taken over the ringtone space and represent 86% of weekly sales, compared to polyphonic tones with 12%," Leakas says. "We continue to track polyphonics, and that space seems to be going to seasonal ringtones and movie and game themes. More people are opting for actual songs. The major labels and their artists are fully entrenched in the business. It's very hit-driven."

Trendy polyphonic titles include themes from Mission: Impossible, The Pink Panther and John Carpenter's Halloween, a perennial.

Among the hottest mastertones: radio hits Jim Jones' We Fly High, Bow Wow's Shortie Like Mine and Fergie's Fergalicious. Big sellers tend to be current because consumers switch tones often, discarding last month's flavor for a fresh hit, making the mastertone trade especially lucrative.

"I prefer the real song as opposed to the polyphonic, where the music is too manipulated," says Jillian Weyman, 15, a high school sophomore in Tarzana, Calif. Her favorite ringtone is the Hush Sound's We Intertwined. "The mastertone just sounds better. If there's a difference in price, it's usually not significant."

Labels are thrilled not only with the fat revenue stream but also with promotional potential.

Before rapper Rick Ross' Port of Miami album reached stores last summer, 1 million phones were ringing with the sound of his Hustlin'. Last month, rapper Jibbs became the second artist to rack up 1 million ringtone sales of a song not yet released, when his Chain Hang Low went platinum before his debut album hit stores.

Chamillionaire's Ridin' (You Can't Arrest Me) is the year's top seller, with 3 million mastertones.

Rap prevails in the chart's upper ranks, but Leakas notes: "The industry is widening. In the past, R&B and hip-hop, which had the best sound in a synthesized clip, dominated. But we've seen classic rock and alternative and other genres appearing as mastertones have become the primary ringtone."

A key difference between polyphonics and mastertones lies in profit splits. The former made money for carriers, publishers and songwriters, but not performers.

"With mastertones, the labels and artists are stakeholders," Mayfield says. "Artists who don't write their own songs get a piece of the action. It's a good revenue generator for the record business.

"(The mastertone chart) is an important metric. You can't just look at album sales anymore to decree the health of any record company. You have to look at more and more parts of the elephant: digital tracks, streaming and ringtones."

Recent sales have averaged 4.6 million ringtones a week. With the expected addition of Sprint Nextel, Nielsen RingScan will track more than 80% of U.S. ringtone sales. Anticipating continued growth in the entire mobile sector, the company will soon track ringback tones, the tune a cell owner installs for incoming callers to hear.

BMI, a trade organization that distributes royalties to 300,000 member songwriters, composers and music publishers, projects U.S ringtone revenues will surpass $600 million in 2006, up from $500 million last year, $245 million in 2004 and $68 million in 2003. Global sales rose 40% in the past year to $3.5 billion, accounting for 10% of the music market, according to the London-based ARC Group, which forecasts skyrocketing growth into 2008, when sales should exceed $5.2 billion.

"We might not see triple-digit growth year over year," Leakas says, "but we expect to see continued growth on a weekly basis."

It brings to mind a sardonic lyric from the Arctic Monkeys' A Certain Romance: "There's only music so that there's new ringtones."

eva cassidy

Justin Timberlake brought SexyBack, but ringtone sales of his songs return profits back to him and his label. Mastertones could help turn the tide against downloading and CD burning.

Some Hollywood couples leave us a touch surprised

Hot reality-TV producer Mark Burnett, 46, cooed he had "found my angel" when he announced his engagement Monday to Touched by an Angel's Roma Downey, 46, who has been doing movie projects and charity work lately. The couple, neighbors who have been dating since 2004, "took a nice friendship and let it blossom into something heavenly," says matchmaker Barbie Adler, CEO of Chicago-based Selective Search. Adler gives USA TODAY the lowdown on how some of Hollywood's other surprising pairings match up:

Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher

Endurance: More than 3 1/2 years. They became a couple in May 2003, and the unlikely pair celebrated their first wedding anniversary in September.

Match: Old soul (Kutcher) meets teenage heart (Moore). Plus, they have the 'told you so' glue."

Sandra Bullock and Jesse James

Endurance: More than 2 1/2 years. Photos of them jogging together in March 2004 made global headlines, and in July, the couple celebrated their first wedding anniversary.

Match: Great match. They're truly, truly happy and best friends."

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes

Endurance: More than 1 1/2years. The newlyweds' whirlwind romance has been going strong since April 2005.

Match: "It's working in the Hollywood bubble for now, but she's still too young, and they're not on equal footing."

Holiday stress is no pleasure to give or receive

It's that time of the year when things get really busy. We find ourselves juggling both our overloaded business schedules as well as our personal calendars. There is an excess of work to do, people to meet, parties to attend, gifts to buy and decorating to do at both business and home.

Keeping in good physical, mental and emotional shape is what will see us through the holiday season. And to stay in great shape, we will need to maintain balance.

I can tell you first-hand that getting thrown off balance can be easy. See if you can relate to the following story.

Every year at this time I meet with a couple of girlfriends for our annual holiday brunch. We get together to talk about what we have done through the year, what we plan for the coming year and just to have fun and celebrate the coming holidays.

Both of my friends, Gail and Marta, are very picky about restaurants, so I always let them select where we are to meet.

But this year, Marta said that she and Gail agreed that I should choose the restaurant for a change.

I had no particular preference and tried to pass the selection back on them. My insistence didn't work. So, I selected a restaurant that I thought we would all enjoy.

Saturday morning as I was preparing to leave the house for the restaurant, Marta called and said she had talked to Gail and they both had heard that the restaurant I had chosen was no longer in business.

I assured Marta that I had eaten there a few days before and it was still in business. We hung up. A few minutes later Gail called and said that she had spoken to Marta and they were concerned that parking would be difficult. I assured Gail that we would have no problems parking. I continued preparing to leave.

Marta called back to say that she didn't think that the restaurant took credit cards and she had to pay with her credit card so she could maintain good records. At the same time that I was explaining to Marta that the restaurant would accept her credit card, Gail was ringing my cellphone to ask if I knew whether the restaurant used real or artificial maple syrup. I suggested that she bring her own bottle just in case.

My mind spinning with thoughts of the restaurant's credit card policy, maple syrup and the possibility of limited parking, I walked to the garage, got into the car and reached into my pocket only to realize that I had forgotten to take the keys.

No problem I thought, I never lock the door that leads from the kitchen to the garage, I'll just go back in and pick up my keys. Wrong! The door was locked.

After waiting 45 minutes for my husband to return from the gym and let me back into the house, I was able to get going on my journey.

I called Gail and Marta on my cellphone to tell them that I would be late and why. Marta said that we should look at my misfortune as some kind of sign to go to another restaurant. By then I was pretty well fed up and insisted that we will meet at the place I had selected.

Well, I finally arrived, and things weren't any better. Both Marta and Gail had gotten on some diet that calls for "real" food and questioned the poor waitress about everything on the menu.

By this time I had a headache that over a couple of days turned into the sniffles and finally an unbelievable cold and earache. Could all of this have come from my Saturday outing with my girlfriends? Yes, says my doctor, and the main culprit is stress.

Stress is what we have to avoid as best we can at all times. However, during the holiday season, stress can rear its head more easily and with greater force.

I probably would have been able to weather the outing with my friends except I had just returned from a three-day trip that took me through three overcrowded airports and extremely long lines, plus I had several client deadlines to meet within hours after my return. Then there was the preparation for Thanksgiving. During Thanksgiving dinner my daughter told me that she always wanted to go shopping on Black Friday — something neither of us had ever done — and so that next day we spent six hours going from store to store. I had looked forward to a relaxing brunch with friends that actually turned into a headache. Any one of these events can spell S-T-R-E-S-S in large letters.

Be on the lookout this holiday season for those little nagging things that can turn in unnecessary stress. Usually this is the time of year that our thoughts and attention turn to doing and being all things to everyone except ourselves. Take care of yourself first and all else will fall into place.

Kellie Pickler

Kellie Pickler rushes out of the gate with "Red High Heels," declaring
to a deadbeat boyfriend "You thought I'd wait around forever but baby
get real ... I'm about to show you just how missin' me feels/in my red
high heels." The strong country-rock beat and sassy tone are suited to
the American Idol runner-up's perky country chirp; the track succeeds
on the basis of its good-natured attitude more than anything close to
brilliant songwriting or performance.

Pickler continues to charm her fans on several subsequent tracks: "One
of the Guys" (though implausible based on the lovely CD insert photos)
expresses longing for the simple pleasures of guy-hood with lyrics
like "Something 'bout old blue jeans and a baseball cap ... chicken
wings, NASCAR, and football Monday nights/Sometimes it's fun to be one
of the guys." Again, the songwriting isn't brilliant, but the sum of
the song's parts, along with Pickler's energetic delivery, pull it
off. The one bright light in her songwriting is from "Things That
Never Cross a Man's Mind" ("that joke is too dirty, this steak is too
thin, that car is too fast, this beer is too cold"). It's clever and
funny, and shows Pickler at her best.

Unfortunately, though, Ms. Pickler doesn't stick to material that
allows her to strut her best stuff. Several cloying, overly slick
ballads are several too many. "Didn't You Know How Much I Loved You"
is pointless and whiny and only serves to emphasize vocal weaknesses.
"Wild Ponies" delivers a poignant story about a woman's emancipation
from an abusive relationship, but the lyrics are so banal and corny
that the message loses potency. The same goes for "I Wonder," the most
successful of the ballads, a song that addresses a girl's longing for
her absentee dad. Pickler and her producers might do well to consider
the fact that you don't have to hit your audience over the head to get
a point across.

KPickler fans will also enjoy American Idol contestant Katharine
McPhee. For some classic "small-town-girl" singing, check out Tammy
Wynette and Loretta Lynn.

XtremeMac

Just in time for the holidays, XtremeMac has today announced Luna ($150), a dual alarm clock and audio system for Dock Connecting iPods. Entering a market currently dominated by iHome’s iH5-series clock radios, Luna comes equipped with a modern white-on-black digital clock face that displays the current time, full date, and dual alarm details by default, switching to an iPod-like menu interface for when you need to change settings. The screen’s brightness is user-adjustable. Four dials on the unit’s top provide controls over bass, treble, radio tuning and volume; an included 18-button remote control lets you access many of the iPod’s and Luna’s features from a distance. The unit will ship on December 18, 2006 to online pre-orders, and will be sold in Apple retail stores starting around the same date.
